Day 419 – August 14th 2023

This morning we are up at 7:30 and ready to go. The weather last night looked like we might have rain but this morning it is clear so we are leaving. We are headed to Leland MI – aka Fishtown.

It is an easy cruising day in wide open water with no waves!!! I can see how this water could be really rough at times!!! But not today — it’s smooth sailing for us!!! We arrived in Leland and got tied up in our slip. It was a good day.

Day 420 -August 15th 2023

Happy Birthday Richard!!!! Richard is 64 today. We walked into town and I went to the store and bought birthday cupcakes and birthday ice cream.

Leland is known as “Fishtown” because it was originally a busy commercial fishing village. Commercial fishing is no longer allowed on Lake Michigan so it’s mainly a tourist village now. They have a pretty downtown, with beautiful parks and a couple of great beaches. The area also has developed into a MI wine region.

For dinner Richard cooked ribs and they were delicious!!! We had cupcakes and ice cream for dessert!!!

Leland Park

Day 421 – August 16th 2023

We had planned to travel to Frankfort today. However we are still in Leland. It is looking like we will be here several days as bad weather with Hugh winds and waves are moving in. The winds are forecast from the west and Lake Michigan will be too rough to travel on. So we are hunkered down for a few days!!! Time to catch up on laundry and boat chores.

Day 422 – August 17th 2023

Still in Leland waiting for good weather. It doesn’t look like it’s anywhere in our future!!! Bad weather continues to move in!!! So here we sit!!!

Life is hard!

Day 423 – August 18th 2023

Still sitting patiently at the dock waiting for good weather. Nothing is happening!!!

Another of the countless Great Loop selfies!

Day 424 – August 19th 2023

We are still sitting and waiting for good weather!!!! The waves on the lake have been huge!!! No way could we be out there in that!!!! So we are patiently waiting!!!! It looks like tomorrow may be a good day. We shall see!!!

The original commercial fishing dock – now tourist central!

Day 425 – August 20th 2023

This morning we are up early ready for a 7:00 am departure. We’ve decided to make up some lost time and make a long day today traveling to Ludington MI. We leave the marina and are instantly in waves!!! It’s going to be a long rocky day!!! The wavy water stayed with us all day but wasn’t too uncomfortable.

Big Sable Lighthouse – the most photographed lighthouse on Lake Michigan

We arrived at Ludington, Michigan at 4:00. We were pretty tired. That was a long day!!! For dinner Richard cooked hamburgers. We had an early dinner then I showered and crawled into my bed. I was a tired puppy!!!

Day 426 – August 21st 2023

This morning we are up at 7:00 am and ready for the day!!! We are going to Grand Haven MI today about 7 hours away. The water today is perfectly calm and we are having a very pleasant ride!!!!

Many of the marinas in Michigan are owned and operated by the state. They tend to be in inland lakes with channels cut to create access from Lake Michigan. The marina in Grand Haven is a great example. We made it to port with no problems. We will be here for one night.

Day 427 – August 22nd 2023

We are leaving Grand Haven this morning and are headed to South Haven MI. It is a pleasant ride with no issues. We get into South Haven around 2:00 pm.

We put the dingy in and went for a ride to check out the area. There are a lot of boats here. We rode for several miles up the little river and there are marinas everywhere!!! Lots of people here!!! We are supposed to be here one night. Back at the boat we have dinner and get ready for bed.

Day 428 – August 23rd 2023

We have decided to stay here another night because it looks like some weather is moving in. So we are still in South Haven. We didn’t do much today. We will see how tomorrow looks in the morning.

Day 429 – August 24th 2023

Well it looks like we will be in South Haven another night. The weather still looks like it’s not going to be good. The Great Lakes are not good if the wind and weather doesn’t cooperate!!! And the weather is not cooperating right now!!! So here we will sit for another night. Maybe tomorrow we can go.

  1. Happy bday to Richard and enjoy your trip. It is absolutely gorgeous in Miramar Beach today. We are blessed the hurricane stayed East. Only 85 degrees too!
    Be safe.
